The Lamb shift contribution of very light milli–charged fermions

The leading order vacuum polarization contribution of very light milli–charged fermions with charge εe and mass μ to the Lamb shift of the hydrogen atom is shown to imply a universal, i.e. μ–independent, upper bound on ε : ε < ∼ 10 for μ < ∼ 1 keV. This is in contrast to expectations based on the commonly used approximation to the Uehling potential.

We update the bounds on fermions with electric charge e and mass m . For m . me we find 10−15 . < 1 is excluded by laboratory experiments, astrophysics and cosmology. For larger masses, the limits are less restrictive and depend on m .
